blue News launches with a new look and a new platform
as it moves into the future of digital news consumption

blue News is turning 30 – and is unveiling a new look. Faster, clearer and consistently tailored to the needs of its users. At the same time, one of Switzerland’s largest news portals is embarking on the next phase of its development with a new technological platform and will be popping the corks in September.

blue News is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year – and is using this opportunity to launch a fresh start: since the end of June, the website and app have been sporting a new look. The relaunch brings not only a modernised design, but above all an improved user experience: content is more clearly structured, easier to find and better optimised for mobile use. The new platform has been developed with a consistent ‘mobile-first’ approach and is based on extensive user testing and analyses of actual usage behaviour.

A dynamic navigation system ensures that topics which are currently particularly relevant or the subject of lively debate are highlighted more flexibly and prominently. At the same time, new topic clusters and focus areas provide greater clarity and guidance – particularly for breaking news, major sporting events or ongoing coverage.

In future, there will be an even greater focus on sport, and football in particular. With a new Live Centre, expanded live tickers, statistics, results and additional video formats, blue News is further expanding its position as a digital sports platform and the ‘Home of Football’. The aim is to make content faster, more direct and closer to the live experience.

The biggest change is taking place behind the scenes: blue News is switching to a completely new content management system from Livingdocs. The new technological infrastructure enables faster loading times, more flexible presentation formats and significantly more agile further development of the platform. This has created the ideal foundation for enhanced collaboration between the three editorial teams (DE/FR/IT) and the 360° distribution of all content. At the same time, it opens up new opportunities for innovative advertising formats and content integrations in partnership with Ringier Advertising.

“We see the new CMS not as a technical update, but as a strategic tool for digital journalism,” says Claudia Lässer, CEO of Entertainment Programm AG. “With it, we are laying the technological foundations to make editorial quality even more visible – across all devices, in all formats, data-driven, user-focused and more visually striking than ever before.”

30 years of blue News: pioneering digital journalism since 1996
This year, blue News is also celebrating its 30th anniversary – a milestone in the history of Swiss online journalism. What began in 1996 as a bold experiment is now one of the country’s news portals with the widest reach: with 37 million visits and over 72 million page views per month, blue News ranks among the three largest commercial online news outlets in Switzerland.

On 16 September 1996, The Blue Window launched as Switzerland’s first purely online media platform, backed by Swiss Online AG, a joint venture between Telecom PTT, IBM Switzerland and major publishing houses such as Ringier, Tamedia and NZZ. The Blue Window later became bluewin. Since 2020, blue News has been carrying on this legacy – with a steadily growing reach, a clear journalistic stance and a focus on quality and relevance.
